No lies: A Lesson on Truth & Tyranny blog post with man holding U.S. flag No King sign

When I wake in the middle of the night obsessing, I know I must write.

First, a history lesson. The United States effectively ended the king's rule on July 4, 1776, with the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. The DoI formalized the colonies' separation from the British monarch, King George III. Had the king triumphed and America lost the Revolutionary War, our founding fathers would’ve faced severe punishment for treason, including execution by hanging, beheading, or drawing and quartering. They also risked seizure of their property, imprisonment, and hardship for their families.

The courage of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Hancock, and many others has ensured the freedoms we enjoy today. If the U.S. were ruled by a tyrant instead of a leader elected by the people, any opposition to said leader would be swiftly crushed. Current dictators in North Korea, China, Russia, and many other countries provide chilling examples of how a country’s citizens suffer when ruled by a tyrant.

While I support everyone’s right to peacefully protest, those who continue to spout the lie that the U.S. is ruled by a (insert adjective…king, tyrant, nazi, fascist, dictator) embolden zealots to justify violence.

Make no mistake. Regardless of who is in the Oval Office, each side has a mile-long list of grievances. As a Christian who follows biblical truth, I must vote for leaders who enact policies that do the most good — and prevent the most harm — for the most people. One must engage in some impressive mental gymnastics--especially as a Christian--to support the ideas of bigger government, unlimited abortion access, unchecked immigration, forced speech, censorship, mutilation and sterilization of children, men in women’s spaces, and a presidential candidate running on “joy” while global war is brewing. Such ideologies, if allowed to continue, were sure to send our already floundering country into a death spiral.

So enjoy the freedom to don costumes, sing peace songs, and wave signs of dissent, but don't conflate catchy slogans with truth. Meanwhile, I’ll keep launching my own personal protest against the tyranny--coming from both within the church and outside of it--that seeks to silence conservative Christian voices in the name of a distorted version of love and kindness.

No, thank you.
